Epigenetics: Monoallelic Expression in the Immune System
نویسندگان
چکیده
Epigenetic modifications to DNA and chromatin programme important genome functions including gene expression, chromosomal architecture and stability, and the maintenance of developmental states. Recent findings further implicate epigenetic modifications in the control of allelic choice in the immune system.

Monoallelic methylation and allele specific expression in a social insect
Social insects are emerging models for epigenetics. Here we examine the link between monoallelic methylation and monoallelic expression in the bumblebee Bombus terrestris using whole methylome and transcriptome analysis. We found nineteen genes displaying monoallelic methylation and expression. They were enriched for functions to do with social organisation in the social insects. These are the ...
متن کاملUsing RNA sequencing for identifying gene imprinting and random monoallelic expression in human placenta.
Given the possible critical importance of placental gene imprinting and random monoallelic expression on fetal and infant health, most of those genes must be identified, in order to understand the risks that the baby might meet during pregnancy and after birth. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to introduce a workflow and tools for analyzing imprinted and random monoallelic gene expre...
متن کاملEpigenetics: A new whiff of monoallelic expression
Odorant receptor genes reveal a new case of monoallelic expression: just one allele of one of the large number of receptor genes appears to be transcribed in a given sensory neuron.
متن کاملEvidence for epigenetic maintenance of Ly49a monoallelic gene expression.
Although structurally unrelated, the human killer cell Ig-like (KIR) genes and the rodent lectin-like Ly49 genes serve similar functional roles in NK cells. Moreover, both gene families display variegated, monoallelic expression patterns established at the transcriptional level. DNA methylation has been shown to play an important role in maintenance of expression patterns of KIR genes, which ha...
متن کاملDifferences between homologous alleles of olfactory receptor genes require the Polycomb Group protein Eed
A number of mammalian genes are expressed from only one of the two homologous chromosomes, selected at random in each cell. These include genes subject to X-inactivation, olfactory receptor (OR) genes, and several classes of immune system genes. The means by which monoallelic expression is established are only beginning to be understood. Using a cytological assay, we show that the two homologou...
